Hernia Surgery Q & A
What is a hernia?
A hernia is a piece of tissue protruding from one area of your body into an area that it is not supposed to be. Common areas for hernias are around the belly button (umbilical hernia), in the pelvis/groin (inguinal hernia) and around the site of a previous abdominal surgery (incisional hernia). The protruding tissue can pass freely through the defect (reducible) or be stuck in the defect (incarcerated).
What is hernia surgery?
Our surgeons use both open and laparoscopic techniques to repair a patient's hernia defect in as minimally invasive a way as possible. During your consultation, our providers will discuss what your surgical options are and how to best help your unique hernia.
What are hernia symptoms?
A common sign of a hernia is a visible bulge or lump that may or may not be present at all times. This may be associated with pain or discomfort in the area that can increase with activity or exercise. Hernias can be diagnosed with a physical exam or can be seen with medical imaging techniques, such as ultrasound, which can be performed in our office during your consultation.
